Carlos Joao Álvarez Guerra: Visual Poetics in the Heart of the Metropolis

Each year, Metropolitan Melodies gathers artists from across the globe who distill the modern world into compelling visual forms — capturing its tension, its noise, and its moments of quiet significance. Among the 2025 Editorial Highlights, Carlos Joao Álvarez Guerra, also known as PAO, stood out for his evocative piece Reflected Rest, a work that blends surrealism, symbolism, and psychological resonance in a single, unforgettable image.

At first glance, Reflected Rest seems to offer a moment of calm: an oversized armchair, a wave rolling across its backrest, minimalist architecture unfolding below, and a steaming red teacup perched on the horizon. But nothing here is entirely what it seems. The domestic becomes monumental. The personal becomes planetary. Stillness is pierced by dissonance — an invitation to look again, and deeper.

says Guerra, whose artistic practice explores the intersection between memory, metaphor, and emotional inquiry.

This conceptual weight is not incidental. Guerra’s training includes a degree in Fine Arts from San Alejandro Academy in Havana, as well as studies in Scenography at the University of the Arts (ISA). His paintings, shaped by this theatrical background, often resemble staged realities — constructed scenes where color, composition, and recurring symbols become actors in a deeper narrative.

His visual language — developed over decades of solo and group exhibitions across Cuba, Canada, and the United States — blends vivid color, layered texture, and subtle irony. Earlier exhibitions include Irreversibilidad (Riera Studio, 2013), Las Siete Vidas de Mario (Luz y Oficios Gallery, 2010), and a presence in events such as the London Art Biennale, Art Basel’s Collateral Exhibitions in Miami, and group shows in Key West’s Historic Gato Building Museum.Guerra’s practice is deeply anchored in what he calls “visual poetics” — a way of painting that both disguises and reveals, creating open-ended dialogues between the visible and the imagined. Themes like identity, transformation, and fragility emerge through surreal compositions and symbolic objects. His armchairs, teacups, and waves are never just what they appear to be: they are metaphors for withdrawal, transition, and emotional tension.

From Cuba to the Global Art Stage

Born in Havana in 1980, Guerra is now based in the United States, continuing his international trajectory through residencies, commissions, and collaborations. He worked with Vertu Fine Art in South Florida (2020–2021), and continues to build bridges between Latin American visual culture and broader global conversations.

His selection for Metropolitan Melodies is a recognition of this trajectory — but also a celebration of an artist who refuses to reduce complex ideas to simple gestures. In Reflected Rest, the artist gives us an object we think we know… until it begins to transform before our eyes.
